In lieu of an apology for missing my photo-a-day for yesterday, I will post today’s photo, which I think serves as an explanation.

Photo a day - life-saving edition

Chopper and I went out to Cypress Gardens and the Old Santee Canal today, and while I got a lot of photos, I got one that I’m proud to call my photo of the day today. Cypress Gardens is a lovely old swamp, and as we were paddling around, I saw something in the water that caught my eye. As we passed, I realized it was a tiny bird, and more to the point - it was alive. We swiped it out of the water and after a few minutes of drying out and warming up, it began to flutter about. When we left, it was headed to the animal care center for an exam. I’m not sure what species it is, although it’s definitely a flycatcher of some kind.

I saved a bird today.

Poker chips

Here’s the proper January 2 installment for the photo a day project in the “found objects” category. These are poker chips that Dad gave to Chopper for Christmas.

I’ve decided that I need to make this light box. Photography isn’t a cheap hobby but this looks both doable and inexpensive.

I’m welcoming in the new year with another monthlong photo-a-day project, which I’ve done a few times before with great success. The simple act of forcing myself to pick up a camera and photograph something every day causes me to be more comfortable with my camera, and I have gotten a few notable shots as a result. If you’re interested, you can check out my past efforts.

As usual, the hedgehogs will feature prominently in the photos for this month. I started off last night with Paisley, who was happy to model in exchange for some tasty roasted waxworms.

I’m absurdly pleased at how today’s photo came out. It’s now 10:30 and I just spent a few minutes wandering around looking for something to take a photo of, and the pothos in the office was looking quite good. I took this with the 50mm lens under compact fluorescent bulbs (which, incidentally, can save the world) of a fairly normal indoor brightness. I love the warm tones that I got — definitely not the usual washed out indoor light. No flash here. I just didn’t need it with such a fast lens. Nikon D70, ISO 400, f2.4, 1/60, 50mm.

Playing catch up

Six photos for seven days. I did in fact take photos on February 20 — those would be the eclipse photos, which warranted their own album. The EXIF information for these can be seen in the Detail view of each photo from the gallery, if you’re interested.

Starting at the top left: The man made from miniature clay pots, affectionately known as “Pot Man Junior” (my mother has the full sized one); our new team mascot at work; the nearly full moon from the parking lot at work; Dexter eating Worm Man’s Worm Farm roasted waxworms out of the jar (mmm); the black vulture Mom gave me for Christmas; and a hedgehog and dragon figurine from my sister-in-law Jan and niece Athene.

Eclipse photos

It was cloudy here, but fortunately, there were enough breaks in the clouds to photograph the eclipse. I’ve got my sequence of photos online for your perusal. I do wish I’d seen this article on photographing the eclipse beforehand, but I actually did most of the things they recommended anyway. The tripod was invaluable, as was the remote shutter for my Nikon for long exposures.

My favorite of the lot: the glorious display of the eclipse at totality with Saturn, Regulus, and some other heavenly bodies visible around it. It doesn’t look like much in the thumbnail view, of course.

I haven’t forgotten about the photo a day project although I am behind in posting them. I promise I have a photo for every day.
